Slow Fashion
The idea and purpose of the design
Letting things take the time they actually take, is not obvious today. Speedy processes are often premiered within business structures.
Slow is a concept of time but also an approach that enable us to be mindful. Slow fashion is a popular word that is seen more and more. A more sustainable way of making and consuming clothes. But how should a clothing brand do this and how should consumers adopt this approach?
Slow down!
What makes the acceleration problematic, when it comes to clothing production, I think, is the compromising of the quality.
From a clothing brand’s perspective, it means having a well-established idea and development plan of the collection and to allow time for research and reflection.
Step one is to have a good idea worth developing. Not to do for the sake of doing it.
Then to choose the smartest and most environmentally friendly options, all the way in the execution of the idea.
Take time for a design process, problem solving, fitting and testing, and find focus and meaning with the collection / garments, before it is produced.
Production should take time, not be careless and stressed. Add some weeks for delays of buttons, repair of machines or anything else that we always know will happen. The end result will depend on it.
Or- Do we need to produce something new at all? Is it really “new” and innovative or just a variation of something we have already done? Is this something that will enrich humanity? Answer: No – continue to Step one and start re-searching. Answer: Yes- Make a solid schedule with space, that will allow certain delays.
Slow fashion is about choosing quality before quantity.
Mindful reflections on what is right to choose, from an environmental perspective. This is very much an issue for those behind the production, but also for the consumer. The idea is that we should not buy “wear and tear” garment but to choose with care, and wear for a long time. Better quality garments last longer. They may cost more, but they pay dividends in number of uses. This is a recurring theme that becomes clearer, to me, the more I think in a holistic perspective. A garment, that I really feel for, I will take care of and use a lot. Fewer but finer garments in the wardrobe, that I really enjoy and care for.
I will write more about sustainable fashion in upcoming posts. So stay tuned!
